One of my dear clients brought in a DVD titled "The S Factor" by Sheila Kelly. Apparently, Sheila Kelly spearheaded the strip exercise phenomenon in health clubs accross the U.S. My client and I both share the same irreverent sense of humor so she thought I'd get a kick.
Sheila, Queen of Sexiness, says:
'S Factor will provide you with a new workout routine that will reshape your body and add a healthy dose of excitement to your love life. But it will do more than that. For me and the women I teach, it is a best way we've found to gain confidence, self-knowledge and physical awareness - all while having a ridiculously good time. THe S Factor promises to empower, enlighten and change your life.'
So Sheila says doing her striptease DVD will enlighten us, improve our confidence and self-awareness huh... this coming from a woman who is crawling on her hands and knees on the cover on the DVD practically growling into the lense. I love it! Sheila, where are you coming from in terms of self-esteem and personal growth if learning striptease moves made you feel like a million bucks? I guess Sheila never had to strip for a living doing lines before a show and sticking her ass in people's faces to pay the bills and put food on the table.
So here's a picture of a woman who once was a real life stripper, Anna Nicole Smith and a picture of Sheila Kelly, someone who never stripped for money. Hmmm...isn't anyone here thinking this stripping fitness trend is a little twisted? Empowerment? I guess it's empowering for women taking strip classes to know they never will have to actually have to strip for money and that they are above striptease as a profession.
And how does crawling on the floor and flipping your hair around actually make anyone fit? I think being silly and having a good time is a must do in anyone's normal routine but really, doing a striptease DVD isn't going to make you look like Sheila.
I HATE HATE HATE fitness fads that try to cash in on people's short attention spans by promising big results and the moon and are absolutely lying their faces off. The historical marginalization of women aside, if you want to try one of those trendy striptease classes don't kid yourself that it replaces a well put together fitness program that includes nutrition, excellent strength work and a moderate amount of cardio.
AND one last thought. If I had to crawl on my hand and knees to turn someone on, there clearly ain't enough lead in the pencil.
Over and out.

You may want to remove that picture of AN Smith. The name of the photo says it is her dead.
